It seems incredible that this year is the 35th anniversary of the release of Marvin Gaye’s classic “What’s Going On” a song that was to become the title track of an album that followed less than a year later. A seamless collection of songs that refused to be track hopped, it is a masterpiece. I wore out my first copy (I’m on my third) and all this time later it still sounds as fresh and as relevant as it did then.
For me the track “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)†Marvin’s comment on the state of the environment is all the more striking 35 years on. For the forests and wildlife, the planet, 1970 seems like the good old days. In his despair for the earth Gaye asked the question “How much more abuse from man can she stand?â€
It scares me to consider it.
